Thinkin' About Wax

I'd rather be sleeping, but since I'm waiting for Andy's work clothes to come out of the dryer I'll tell you all about something a tad amazing that happened today.
.
During our quarterly visit with Jack's ENT a few weeks ago, we were a little bummed to find out that the tube in his left ear is completely blocked with a chunk of wax. (Seriously, I have the waxiest-eared kids you've ever met.) We needed to get him tested to find out if it was affecting his hearing in that ear. Duh, it's blocked, right? But I digress.
.
Long, long story, but we have no audiologist at ASDB right now that can see us, so the folks at our early childhood program (CHIC) set us up to see staff members down at the University of Arizona. It was quite an adventure getting down there, and there was more than 1 close call with a wayward student pedestrian or bicyclist. Can't you see the GIANT Suburban driving in the street, people? But again I digress.
.
Back to the topic at hand. I've had more than one person ask just how they test these little munchkins to find out what their hearing is like. Here's a quick explanation:
.
1. Stick 1 baby, 1 mommy, & 1 test assistant in a big box of a sound booth bursting with wires, cameras, computers & mounds of toys.
.
2. Strap said baby into a high chair or make him balance on Mommy's lap without upsetting him, because that will ruin the test.
.
3. Pull a LONG wire out from the giant mass of electronics lashed to the wall & clip the 2 separate raisin-sized boxes at the end to the baby's back/shoulders.
.
4. Jam the plastic tubing attached to the boxes into baby's ears & spend the next 30 minutes trying to keep him from yanking them out.
.
5. Test assistant now VERY QUIETLY waves interesting toys & various attention-getters in front of baby, without allowing him to touch them, speak about them, or actually interact with them in any way. Sounds fun, huh?
.
6. The audiologist on the other side of the police department-looking window uses a computer to feed sounds into either the right or left ear via the ever-coming-loose tubing.
.
7. Baby should now wrench his attention from beautiful sparkly ball & prickly-sided blocks & look across the room in the direction that the sound came into his ear.
.
8. Audiologist activates a light & small motorized toy on the wall as a "reward" for baby completing test correctly.
.
9. Repeat OVER, & OVER, & OVER with various frequencies & sound effects until a satisfactory reading is obtained.
.
Awesome.
I agree with someone that described it as a "soft science", but that makes the audiology staff really mad, so don't tell them I said that. It's how the system works, so we grudgingly play along.
.
So, after about 35 minutes of wrestling, cajoling, & bribing they let us out of the box. Jack just runs like an escaped convict after we get done. It's hilarious. I, however, now get to sit down & examine the results of the test that are graphed on a chart that looks like a map of the ocean floor somewhere off the coast of South Carolina.
.
Imagine my surprise when they announced that Jack has -and I quote- NORMAL hearing in his right ear. Seriously, NORMAL. Of course, we will have to endure many more sessions locked in the box to verify this, but it's amazing for me to hear what the Lord promised us so long ago. And if he has a bad testing session next time, that could mean that they say it was just a fluke. Only time will tell, I suppose.
.
Of course, his other ear has got some problems because the wax is totally blocking the tube & consequently, his hearing is showing signs of that. So we'll do some more testing to see if we need to have the ENT do surgery again, or if the hearing aid makes up for the loss of hearing from the wax.
.
I would bet $100 that none of you have ever concentrated so intently on your child's ear wax. It's amazing to think that such a thing as his ear secretions can so fully govern what we do in our lives. Ridiculous.
.
I refuse to be excited, giddy, happy, or even a tad hopeful about today. I'm just going to carry on normally & let the experts handle the rest. Because there's one thing I've learned while being a mom- What you think you know, you just don't, & that's just the way it is.

I'm looking out my window at the
COLD, WIND, RAIN, AND HAIL
and thinking:
.
I can't WAIT to go camping tomorrow!
.
Brrrrrr........I'm saying lots of prayers that it clears up before the other YW leaders & I get to head off into the wilderness with our girls.
.
I am so glad I was not a pioneer.

Where Did It Go?

Wow!
I dropped my tax return in the mail at about 4:30 Saturday afternoon.
.
As of this afternoon, that money had already been whisked out of my account to be spent by irresponsible politicians & other cash-happy state employees.
.
You know, I tried to call a state agency a few weeks ago & I think it took them longer to answer the phone than it did for my check to clear this week.
.
Government- gotta love it.

Happiness & A Toe Update

Coupon shopping does have some disadvantages.
About 90% of this stuff was free.
Yea!

But that means that my cabinets used to look like this:

(Without the super-helpful toddler)

Boo!
Now they look like this:

Ahhh, it feels good.
.

On another note, I was able to cut Jack's toenail for the first time since the accident at Thanksgiving mangled it all to heck. Emma called it his "claw".After a little clipping it looks much better. It's still pretty raised, but once that healthy nail grows out some more it's going to be totally normal.

I'm just glad he has a nail at all! Just look how cute those pudgy little toddler toes are- I just wanna eat 'em up!

Eggstravaganza

We're sorry, Grandpa. We should've known better than to let Frank handle the car you made for our ward's annual Eggstravaganza. He let his friends play with it & they broke the egg after only 1 race. Bummer.
.
So we forged ahead with the Merriman family's other 2 entries:
#1-
.
The Pretty Racer, run by Emma
(Emma & Frank colored themselves in the front seat)
It was AWESOME to see her up there with all the men & their fancy cars. She did this all by herself & I was very proud of my munchkin. Can you tell she won this race?#2-
The Merriman Rotisserie, run by Mommy, Daddy, & eventually FrankBasically, the car has to roll down the ramp, slam into the bricks, & the egg has to remain past the black line. Here's an example of our perfectly engineered "car" doing its job.

Even though we bounced backwards, since the car rolled back across the line we still won the race. Yea!

Our cars did really well because our eggs never broke. If you don't break you don't get eliminated. So we just kept racing & racing until finally we came out with 7th place for the Merriman Rotisserie & 9th place for the Pretty Racer. Pretty good, considering there were probably 30 cars there.I can't wait to see what Andy comes up with next year.

I Hate LIFE (& other more important stuff)

I hate that I run on autopilot.
I hate that I'm gone all the time.
I hate that LIFE gets in the way of living.
I hate that I can't even remember the last time I read a relaxing book.
I hate that I have a whole list of things to clean today instead of taking a nap.
I'm tired.
OK, I'm done now.
.
Now that I've vented a little, I'm going to ignore the stack of bills to pay & the 9-item cleaning list I've made for myself today. I haven't really blogged in ages, so here goes. I might be a little rusty, so please forgive me if I ramble or get lost along the way.
.
We spent Easter in Safford.
We colored eggs.
Well, we tried to color them & Jack tried to eat them & drink the dye.
We played with cousins.
.
We took family pictures up towards Morenci in the most amazing display of poppies I've ever seen. The group ones were good, but my kids refused to cooperate. This was the best it was gonna get.Individual pictures, however, were a different story.
Please to enjoy my gorgeous kiddos amongst some gorgeous flowers. So I'm biased, shoot me.
.
We hunted Easter eggs- some with more enthusiasm than others.
Then we came home to all of the Easter stuff that I had so carefully chosen weeks ago. I forgot it ALL at home & had to go buy stuff at Wal-Mart for Easter morning.
Ugh.
The best laid plans, right?
.
Then we went back to normal life.
Yea.

Why I Don't Diet

I got a 200 Calorie pizza from some company for free.
.
Sure, I'll try it, it's free, right?
Uh, what?
.
Somehow lunch doesn't seem very filling when the utensil you eat it with dwarfs the actual food.
I had to eat a bunch of Easter candy just to even everything out.
